WHAT'S IN A NAME

Sometimes lazy bookmakers give teams too much respect because of who they are not what they do on the pitch, it's your duty to make them pay.

THE GHOST OF BETTING PAST

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Last night's game saw a lot of action, both on the pitch, in Lille's case off it. Man United were brought in by the bookies to 6.0 quicker than Alex Ferguson reeling in Gary Neville, and while it looks job done, they did struggle against an ordinary Lille side and there seems little value to be had there. Elsewhere Arsenal lost 1-0 and then proceded to both shorten and drift, meaning people were unsure if this was a good or a bad 1-0. Confusion reigns supreme with some bookies going 5-6 Arsenal to qualify, others 5-6 Arsenal not to qualify, madness. It should be an interesting second leg, though I'm personally offering 100-1 odds that Thierry Henry actually manages a smile this season, any takers, thought not.
Real and Bayern had a goal feast, both are bad teams and you shouldn't get fooled by that, Celtic v Milan finished 0-0 and our tip Nakumra hit a free kick into the keepers hands, which somewhat suprisingly was probably the best thing Celtic did all game. With just one win in eleven away games we can understand why Milan will go off so short, but they will need Inzaghi back and Gilardino to remember that the aim of the game is to put that football thing in between those sticks.
Tonight's games should give us a clearer view of who could win the champions league.

CHAMPIONSHIP: Things we were on the ball with, Sunderland, Leicester, West Brom, things we got badly wrong Southend and Hull. The top of the table has more betting up and downs than an up and down thing but real value lies with Sunderland 13.0 with sportingodds. The odds pay a fifth the odds the top three something which is well with in Sunderland's reach. Sunderland were very unlucky not to beat Brum last night and have upcoming big games against the so called better teams, including a home game against Derby this Saturday. If they win that there odds will fall, our advice is to get on them, they have two quality wingers, goalscorers, tight midfield and a well organized defence, but most importantly bags of confidence and desire.
Elsewhere at the bottom it has been far too tight to call though with each side down the bottom showing capability of winning games, Burnely look worth a small wager at 10.0 with Stan James in the relegation market. They are woefully short of confidence and could get suckered into the relegation battle.

LEAGUE ONE: What's in a name and awful lot it seems, Forest who are stuttering their way thrugh the title race like an asthmatic turtle are 4.0 to win the league, Yeovil who are on the same points as them are quadruple their odds. 16-1 is an obsecene price with Betfred and value for Yeovil to finish top three. Elsewhere Scunthorpe are a generous 15/8 bearing in mind they are six points clear, Forest miss tactics and Oldham miss Sean Gregan, their biggest danger could well be Bristol City.
At the bottom Rotherham look gone but seven points seperate seven and expect many surprise results like last night's five-two away win for Orient over Millwall, could be some good value odds on offer in forthcoming weeks.

LEAGUE TWO:Oh Hartlepool, where for art thou Hartlepool, oh there you are three points clear. It's too early to get smug but 14/1 at the start of the season, 10-1 a month ago, 9-2 a few weeks ago, we've called Hartlepool all the way down the line. Even at 15/8 they could still be considered value, they were lucky last night but luck carries a big part. The nearest rivals are imploding which not only makes our longterm bet look good, but makes Stockport at 13.0 with Betdirect, a fifth the odds the top three, good value. Outside of Hartlepool they are the form team and can take advantage of the other sides drop in form to sneak into the top three.
Also Darlington could be good value to get promotion at 8.0 with betfair, they are only six points off Wycombe and could sneak into the playoffs via the backdoor, from there it's anyone's game.

THE GHOST OF BETTING PRESENT
BRONZE BET: If last night taught me something it was that there's nothing funny than watching Alex Ferguson give Gary Neville the full on hairdryer treatment, oh and that it's a nightmare to call the first leg of two legged games in Europe. That's why our betting tips will more or less avoid Europe, the only call were going to make is in the Barcelona v Liverpool game to get on Liverpool with plus one, covered as always by the draw. Barcelona are missing some striking options and this year don't have Larsson in reserve, Barca might win this one but Liverpool can keep it tighter than eighties lycra and at 2.25 the win, the 3.6 draw, seems great value.

SILVER BET: Inter versus Valencia to go over the two goals at 2.4 with ukbetting. Shall I show you the ways, Zlatan, Adriano, Crespo, Italy's top scorers, against a Valenica whose last four games have averaged three goals each and have strikers like Villa and Morientes not to mention the class of wingers, this might be europe but it could go over the over, quite easy.

GOLD BET:When I said I was going to more or less avoid Europe I didn't quite think my first two bets would be Europe, I've got a future in politics clearly, anyway I can promise this last one has nothing to do with Europe other than Stoke and Derby are both located in Derby. You have to go back to november and numerous games ago for the last time Derby one by more than one goal and Bet365 are taking a chance with their handicap market. By offering 2.0 Stoke with the plus one and 3.6 the draw. Stoke are a well organized difficult team to break down and you have to go back to December 16 for the last time they lost by more than one goal. Today's gold bet is Stoke on the handicap.

ELSEWHERE: They are two tricky premier league games with little give on the odds and as such that's enough for today.

THE GHOST OF BETTING FUTURE
I know I promised you a full scale NBA roundup and that's coming soon but with the season just re-starting it seems a good time to tell you that as far as I can see only Detroit and Miami can win the east right now and at 3.5 and 5.0 each you should get on them.

Well that's it for today, be back tommorrow for more betting stuff, have a good sports day everyone and remember there are some stupid people in the world don't be one of them. Take for instance the women who went on the US version of who wants to be a millionaire and used all three lifelines and still got the 100 dollar question wrong. The question, what is largest? a peanut, the moon, an elephant, or hey who you calling large. She ignored her best friend and 98 per cent of the audience and became today's mug of the day. Avoid getting mugged and sign up for the muggings at the bottom of the page.

See you all tommorrow
